Why?

Tackling environmental change is all about communication. No one company and industry has the solution, so collaboration is essential. Disclosure frameworks facilitate this by providing a robust standard for data transfer between actors, particularly companies and their (prospective) investors. Without clear, comparable information, even the most well intentioned investor cannot make accurate decisions on where to allocate their capital in pursuit of net zero or to avoid driving nature degradation.

It is of course also true that the landscape of regulatory requirements can be overwhelming, and there is certainly an argument to be made that the volume and diversity of initiatives can take valuable time away from more direct forms of action. Whatever your perspective, reporting is increasingly becoming a necessary or even mandatory requirement, and approaching it in a strategic fashion can minimise the burden on company resources (not to mention mental sanity of employees), and can even lead to business opportunities. A company’s sustainability credentials are often judged, for example, on the quality of its sustainability report, its clarity, depth of analysis, and even presentation.

Reporting is a particular area of expertise for me. I love writing and believe in finding a balance between a trusted professional tone, and one that conveys honestly the difficulties of meeting rapidly growing sustainability expectations in an open and good-humoured manner. In technical terms, I am experienced in working with the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD), the Taskforce for Nature Related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and a range of global taxonomies including CBI, the EU, and ASEAN.

Credentials

I was one of two primary authors of a collaborative report between KPMG and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, outlining how companies could ‘Build the Business Case for Sustainability’. I devised a system of ‘Opportunities’, ‘Drivers’, and ‘Impact Tables’ which formed the backbone of the guide and gave companies the tools to rapidly identify and evaluate potential sustainability initiatives.

I was part of a small team which produced KPMG UK and KPMG Global’s first ever respective TCFD reports. Writing and publication followed a long process of peer benchmarking, research and stakeholder engagement, including interviewing the heads of all business functions to illuminate KPMG’s unique exposure to climate-related risks and opportunities.

I was a contributor to the TCFD’s final status report, focusing on linking sustainability to valuation.

I devised and authored iClima Earth’s first Impact Report, effectively a handbook for our novel approach to climate change. The report was well received and widely shared, and help to establish us as a leading voice on avoided emissions.

I have completed a number of client-based projects involving the TCFD, CSRD and TNFD, often working on providing crosswalks between different regimes to maximise the efficiency of reporting.
